The Utilitarian Ceramics Biennale was launched as a result of interest on behalf of the Franz Mayer Museum and a group of potters that identified the need to maintain, promote and continue the tradition of Mexico’s ceramics production and the art’s long tradition since pre-Hispanic times.
Since 2003 the Franz Mayer Museum has organized exhibitions to promote innovation in contemporary ceramics design, and in order to strengthen and stimulate artistic creation with greater technical quality.
Every two years, potters, designers and artisans from all over the country participate in the competition. The project has seen the participation of more than 800 artists from different regions of Mexico, with a total of 1,860 pieces.
In addition, each biennale includes conferences, workshops and the sale of ceramics.
